2010 SPRING BLOOD DRIVE
WEDNESDAY, MARCH 24, 2010
The theme was "Spring Break" so students donned their flip-flops and shades and headed to the new gym to take a "break" and help others by donating blood. Lots of local businesses donated door prizes and many community members helped out by stopping in and donating as well.

2009 WINTER BLOOD DRIVE
The Winter Student Blood Drive was held on Monday, December 7th from 8 AM-1 PM in the new Gym.
The theme was "The Spirit of Giving" and Christmas movies, decorations, candy canes, and festive attire were everywhere! Donors added a blood drop ornament to the trees and door prizes were donated by local businesses. We collected 80 units of blood and that helped out the MRBC because a number of drives were cancelled that week due to snow.
Thanks to all our donors, door prize sponsors, and faculty for their support!!

Drake A and Justin B coordinated the event with plenty of help from current and new members alike. The theme was a "Pool Party" and everyone dressed for the event in flip-flops, shades, pool-floaties, flower lei's and even snorkel & fins!  We set a record of 112 donors (unofficial at posting day) and had door prizes for everyone.

2007 Winter WHS Student Blood Drive
The NHS Blood Drive was in the New Gym adjacent to the Auditorium. The theme was  "High School Hits Hollywood". Members and Blood Center staff donned sungalsses, showed popular movie DVDs, and each donor was invited to place their own "Star" on the Hollywood-style WHS "Wall of Fame". Even a red carpet led the way from the donor area to the refreshments in the lower lobby!

Student Mentors
NHS members are working in elementary classrooms and in junior high study halls to provide support for student learning and assist teachers in giving small group and individual instructional help to students. Members have also helped Kindergarten students learn Spanish and worked with the Book Swap & Reading programs at the elementary building.

New Student Packets
NHS members helped design and create informational packets for new students that were distributed at the August registration days and will be used for new students throughout the school year. They include updated building maps, lists of activities, sponsors/coaches and where to find them, who's who in the building and where to go for specific questions, athletics information, eligibility policies, graduation requirements, the WHS grading system, and course information. Several items were even used by our Principal in his New Teacher Workshop!

SELECTION AND DISMISSAL PROCEDURES
NHS SELECTION PROCESS:  All students, grades 10-12, who have met the GPA minimum standard of 3.25 by the end of first semester will be given an application form to complete if they wish to be considered for membership. This is the student's choice.
Beginning with the Spring 2008 Selection Process, the new minimum GPA requirement will be 3.35. Current members will continue to be held to the present 3.25 GPA requirement through their Commencement.

The Faculty Committee, consisting of five teachers selected by the principal, will meet and consider the nominations and the applications. The Faculty Committee, by majority vote, will select those students who they feel meet the four criteria for membership as determined by the National Honor Society. Keep in mind, all four tenants must be demonstrated to the committee, by your application, your essay, and your references.
  • Scholarship
  • Leadership
  • Character
  • Service
The Faculty Advisor (Ms. Paper) serves as a nonvoting member of the Faculty Committee. The Faculty Advisor will meet with those students selected for membership and inform them of their selection. All selection procedures follow the National NHS Constitution and Guidelines.

NHS DISCIPLINARY and DISMISSAL PROCESS:  When students who have been selected for membership in the National Honor Society fall below the standards which were the basis for their selection, the following procedures will be followed:
ACADEMIC VIOLATIONS: If the cumulative GPA falls below the minimum requirement (3.25), they will be placed on probation for one quarter. If, at the end of the quarter, their GPA is not up to the minimum standard they will be permanently dismissed from NHS.
CHARACTER OR WHS GOOD CONDUCT POLICY VIOLATIONS:  If students are involved in activities that indicate they have violated the selection standard relative to "Character" or the Wilton Good Conduct Policy, the Faculty Committee will determine the following:
  • For Wilton Good Conduct Policy violations, a member will be placed on probation for one year from the date of the Conduct Policy Violation Conference. They cannot participate in NHS events or the Induction Ceremony during that 12 month period.
  • If the student would like to earn the privilege of wearing the NHS stole at graduation and being recognized in the Commencement Program, they must arrange to complete 30 hours of community service through an Advisor-approved community organization or site.
  • Automatic revocation of membership privileges, such as participation in events or election to office.
  • In the case of a flagrant violation of school rules or civil laws, a member may be dismissed without warning.
  • In all cases of impending dismissal, a member shall have a right to a hearing before the Faculty Committee.
